Elecampane
The root was employed by the ancients, mentioned in Pliny, Natural History 19.29 both as a medicine and as a condiment, and in England it was formerly in great repute as an aromatic tonic and stimulant of the secretory organs.
Elecampane is used for lung diseases including asthma, bronchitis and whooping cough.
Latin name:
Inula racemosa
Tibetan name:
Manu
Part used:
Root
Hepatoprotective effect – shows to protect against hepatic ischemic/reperfusion injury.
Cardioprotective activity – shows to have protective effect against myocardial infarction damage; improves cardiac function, inhibits lipid peroxidation, increases activity of antioxidant enzymes in cardiac muscles, decreases oxidative stress and cardiac injury, maintains cell membrane integrity; normalises histopathological changes in heart after MI; causes improvement in precordial pain and dyspnea, restoration of normal ECG patterns, and significant reductions in cholesterol, triglycerides and total lipid levels; decreases heart rate and force of contraction (negative inotropic and chronotropic effect); exhibits vasodilatory action; improves exercise tolerance; findings suggests to be beneficial as supportive therapy for hypertension, arrhythmias, tachycardia, angina chest pain, chronic heart failure, coronary artery diseases, and myocardial infarction; decreases chances of development of atherosclerosis and thrombosis.
Anti-hypertensive effect
Adrenergic beta-receptor blocking activity – shows to lower plasma insulin and glucose levels; significantly neutralizes adrenaline induced hyperglycaemia; shows to have negative inotropic and chronotropic effects.
Hypoglycaemic activity – lowers blood glucose level and enhances liver glycogen without increasing plasma insulin level.
Cortisol inhibiting potency – shows to decrease corticosteroid-induced elevation of serum thyroid hormones (T4, T3) and glucose.
Anti-diabetic effect – shows to significantly decrease blood glucose levels; improves lipid profile; improves symptoms of polyuria and polydipsia, especially after long-term treatment; balances blood pressure and decreases waist circumference; exhibits protective effect on renal function.
Anti-hyperlipidemic activity – decreases serum LDL, cholesterol, triglycerides and increases HDL.
Antimicrobial activity – shows antimycobacterial and anthelminthic activity; have anti-fungal activity (against Aspergillus spp., Candida spp.); exhibits significant antibacterial activity (against E.coli, S.aureus).
Anti-inflammatory activity – shows significant anti-inflammatory activity against exudative phase of inflammation.
Analgesic activity
Anti-allergic activity – inhibits mast cell degranulation; protects against cutaneous anaphylaxis; possesses anti-histamine activity and protects against bronchospasm induced by histamine; shows to have protective effect against type I hypersensitivity reactions.
Anti-asthmatic activity – shows to be effective as supportive therapy for bronchial asthma; reduces eosinophilia and IgE; significantly reduces severity of asthma attacks; reduces need in usage of inhalers and oral bronchodilators; reduces dyspnea, cough and wheezing.
Bronchodilatory activity – shows marked protective effect against bronchospasm induced by histamine and 5-HT (serotonin).
Antioxidant activity – have free radical scavenging activity; inhibits lipid peroxidation.
Adaptogenic activity
Anti-cancer activity – shows cytotoxic and anti-proliferative activity against lung, liver, stomach, colon, ovarian cancer cell lines.
