Sirdslapu tinospora
Moonseed is an available and well known herb all over the world. It is traditionally use for various aliment like fever, vomiting, diabetes, jaundice, anaemia, polyuria and skin diseases.
Latine name:
Tinospora cordifolia
Tibet name:
Letre
Parts Used:
Twigs
1200 m and lower altitude. It grows in hot, slightly humid forests, and leaning against walls. It is a climber.
Antioxidant activity – inhibits lipid peroxidation; reduces oxidative stress; scavenge free radicals; has neuro-protective effect.
Adaptogenic activity – increases resistance of the body to physical, chemical and biological stress and builds energy and general vitality; improves physical performance of healthy individuals in the presence of physical stress; suppresses over-activation of sympathetic nervous system; improves cognitive function in sleep deprived conditions.
Anti-stress activity – normalizes stress-induced biochemical changes in norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin.
Nootropic effect
Antidepressant activity – possibly via inhibition of monoamine oxidase activity.
Cognitive function improvement – protects brain from ischemic damage; exhibits acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity; prevents oxidative stress.
Aphrodisiac activity – improve libido and potency.
Radioprotective and cytoprotective activity.
Anti-neoplastic activity – shows to reduce tumour mass and increase survival time; exhibits regulatory effect on serum cytokines; pretreatment showed protective effect on spleen and testis; HeLa cells showed increased radiosensitivity; shows apparent cytotoxic activity against tumour cells and induces cell apoptosis.
Anti-bacterial activity – shows broad spectrum inhibitory activity; shows to inhibit the survival of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in macrophages.
Analgesic activity – antioxidant and calcium action contribute for attenuating sciatica pain; it increases levels of monoamines like noradrenaline, serotonin and dopamine which may be responsible for its anti-nociceptive activity; it contains alkaloids, glycosides and flavonoids which inhibit production of prostaglandins. Analgesic activity shows to involve both central (opioid receptors) as well as peripheral (inhibition of PG synthesis) mechanisms.
Anti-pyretic activity.
Anti-inflammatory activity
Hepatoprotective action – normalizes altered liver functions; regulates carbohydrate and lipid metabolism; protects liver from lead induced damage.
Cardioprotective action – exhibits reduction in infarct size and in serum and heart lipid peroxide levels; showed to normalize atrial and ventricular fibrillation and flutter; acts as anti-arrhythmic; decreases heart rate.
Gastroprotective action – relieves nonspecific diarrhoea, dysentery, peptic ulcer and abdominal pain.
Neuro-protective action – increases dopamine levels; reduces dopaminergic neurodegeneration; reduces iron induced neural damage; protects from oxidative stress; suggests positive impact on preventing development of Parkinson’s disease.
Hypolipidemic activity – reduces serum and tissue cholesterol, phospholipids and free fatty acid levels.
Anti-coagulant and platelet anti-aggregators activity
Immunomodulatory activity – regulates serum cytokines; has anti-complement effect; reduces allergic rhinitis, sneezing, nasal obstruction and pruritis.
Pretiekaisuma iedarbība
Anti-diabetic activity – reduces blood glucose levels; improves lipid profile; reduces oxidative stress; prevents retinal oxidative stress and restores antioxidant enzyme levels; demonstrates improvement in the pain relief, motor and sensory nerve conduction velocities in patients with neuropathy; attenuates progression of renal damage and prevents polyuria; helps healing of diabetic ulcers; protects against ischemic and glucose deprived brain damage in chronic diabetes. Shows to be effective in preventing, postponing or treatment of secondary diabetic complications.
Role in gestational diabetes – provides significant protection against diabetes-induced maternal and fatal oxidative stress.
Urogenital system effect – shows to reduce prostate size; decreases blood urea concentration in uraemia; relieves urinary infections and dissolves urinary calculi.
Osteoprotective effect – stimulates growth of osteoblasts; increases differentiation of cells into osteoblastic lineage; increases mineralization of bone-like matrix; prevents bone loss; provides nutritional calcium; shows antiporotic effect.
Nutritional supplementation – provide sufficient amount of protein, fibre, major and minor elements. It has high potassium (regulatory function of nerve impulses), high chromium (regulation of carbohydrate utilization), sufficient iron (hematinic) and calcium (regulatory functions in nervous, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems).
