With Dr. Sherab in Lapchi, one of the “Three Holy Places of Tibet”, other two are Mt. Kailash and Tsari.

In 2006, my life took a profound turn when my parents took me on a pilgrimage to India and Nepal, exploring the sacred heart of the Himalayas for the first time. This transformative journey to holy sites left an indelible mark on my consciousness. Until then, I had been an ordinary teenager with no particular interest in spirituality or medicine. However, upon returning home, I felt an irresistible pull to delve into the wisdom that the Himalayan region had to offer.

Soon after, my curiosity led me to Tibetan Medicine, and I began devouring every book on the subject and even attempted to learn the basics of the Tibetan language from a simple guidebook. Serendipity played its part when my mother crossed paths with a Tibetan Doctor who had once practiced in Latvia. She mentioned my desire to study Tibetan medicine, seeking his guidance. Dr. Sherab, who was residing in Nepal at the time, suggested that I visit him to determine if karma favored our connection. In 2007, at the age of 17, I embarked on a life-altering journey, moving to Kathmandu, Nepal, where Dr. Sherab graciously accepted me as his student.

Over the next seven years, I immersed myself in the world of Tibetan Medicine. Mornings were devoted to the study of classical theoretical texts, while the rest of the day was spent shadowing Dr. Sherab in every aspect of his work, from clinic maintenance to product formulation, translation, patient assistance, and medicine preparation. I was fortunate to find exceptional Tibetan language instructors who helped me quickly grasp the language, enabling me to study medicine from its original texts.

Each summer, during Nepal’s monsoon season, I returned to Europe for eight years, spending my summers in Belgium with my Tibetan Buddhist teacher, Patrul Rinpoche. There, he established the Zangdok Palri Institute, a unique institution where he and other Lamas and teachers meticulously taught Buddhist philosophy and rituals in the traditional monastic manner. This experience provided me with a deep and gradual understanding of different levels of Buddhist insight into the nature of the mind, accompanied by practical guidance for our spiritual  practice.

Year after year, I accompanied Dr. Sherab to various Himalayan regions, visiting sacred sites and learning about medicinal plants along the way. We explored the Annapurna region, the medicinal valleys of Yolmo, the remote and wild Lapchi, and journeyed to Sikkim and Bhutan, Dr. Sherab’s homeland. Together, we organized numerous free medical camps in remote Nepalese villages, offering care to those with limited access to doctors. Almost annually, we made the pilgrimage to Bodhgaya, where Buddha attained enlightenment, to participate in  World Peace prayers and distribute free medicinal tea to attendees, strengthening them and aiding in the prevention of contagious diseases.

I was privileged to travel to Tibet twice with Patrul Rinpoche, visiting the Dzogchen valley, where he constructed the Zangdok Palri temple. There, I participated in practices, received transmissions, and visited holy places.

My journey introduced me to numerous Buddhist masters, each of whom bestowed their blessings, transmissions, or teachings upon me. I pursued traditional Tibetan Medicine under the guidance of Dr. Sherab, eventually earning the title of Tibetan doctor (Men-pa) from him. My travels took me to countless holy places across the Himalayas and India, exposing me to high-altitude wilderness and spiritual depth.

In 2015, following the completion of my Tibetan Medicine studies and at the encouragement of my two primary teachers, Dr. Sherab and Patrul Rinpoche, I returned to Latvia. That same year, I gained admission to Riga Stradins University, and by 2021, I had completed a six-year medical doctor training program. Parallel to university studies I have started my private practice as a Tibetan Doctor in Riga.

Receiving blessing from His Holiness the Dalai Lama for our Daknang, Dharamsala, India.

In 2012, I had the honor of participating in the 2nd International Conference on Tibetan Medicine in Dharamsala, India. During this significant event, His Holiness the Dalai Lama delivered a speech emphasizing the importance of collaboration between Tibetan Medicine and other medical systems. He highlighted the need to reintroduce traditional forms of medicine delivery, beyond pills, and explore innovative approaches. In response to this vision, in 2016, we established Daknang with the mission to create, promote, and research traditional Tibetan Medicine formulas in a new liquid extract form. In 2023 we have once again travelled to Dharamsala to offer our Daknang products to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and received the praise and blessings for the future work.

Over two years of collaboration with Latvian University, we meticulously researched the most effective extraction method, employing various solvents. Our journey led us to the ideal solution: processing Himalayan herbs with organic grain alcohol at a low temperature, assisted by ultrasound technology. This method allowed us to extract the maximum amount of nutrients and phytochemicals, ensuring the highest quality in our liquid extracts.

As I reflect on this incredible journey that has led me from an ordinary teenager to a dedicated student of Tibetan Medicine and then Doctor, the creation of Daknang stands as a testament to the profound impact of this ancient healing tradition on my life. Our mission at Daknang is clear: to bridge the wisdom of Tibetan Medicine with modern innovation. We are committed to promoting, developing, and researching traditional Tibetan Medicine formulas in liquid extract form, making these precious remedies more accessible and effective for people around the world.

Our aspiration is rooted in the belief that the healing power of Tibetan Medicine should be available to all beings, transcending boundaries and cultural differences. Through continued dedication, collaboration, and research, we aim to unlock the full potential of Tibetan Medicine, bringing its transformative benefits to those seeking holistic healing and a deeper connection to the natural world.

The journey continues, and we invite you to join us as we explore new horizons, advance our understanding, and share the timeless wisdom of Tibetan Medicine with open hearts and open minds. Together, we can create a world where healing is not just a remedy but a way of life, nurturing the well-being of all beings on this remarkable planet we call home. Thank you for being part of our journey towards a healthier, more harmonious future.
